Exegetical - Paul teaches the Ephesian believers that the church of Jesus Christ was a mystery not revealed previously but now made known through divine revelation.

Homiletical - Christ’s church is God’s magnificent mystery that demands our greatest commitment.

Purpose -
1) Challenge people to a greater commitment to the church.
2) Understand the impact the church can and should have on the world.
3) Understand the centrality of the church to history.
4) Understand that in Christ the church has awesome privileges.
5) For the lost to turn to Christ.

INTRODUCTION:

I remember a friend in college who was disillusioned with the Church. He was ready to bail. The church he attended was fighting all the time. Many of the people lived hypocritical lives. Nobody seemed real. He asked me a question. Is the church really important? Why not just worship God on my own? Why bother with all the church at all. This person ended up joining a cult because he thought he found something there he didn’t find in the church.

I think a lot of people understand. Some are bored. Church seems irrelevant to life. Others are tired. They work themselves to death and wind up just worn out - not filled up. Some people even doubt if Christ ever intended for the church to be what it is today.

Paul answers this question in these verses. Is the church really important? We find four truths in this passage that tell us if the church is really important at all.


I) THE PRICE THAT WAS PAID FOR THE CHURCH - VS. 1-2
We see the value of the church in the life of Paul.
First, we must know what Paul is talking about when he discusses the church.
He is not talking about a building or place.
He is not talking about an organization. Some churches are large, huge organizations with large budgets and busy staffs. But that is not the Church.
