Ephesians 4:25-32
CIT - Paul describes the new life that the Ephesians Christians are to put on.
Proposition - Christians are to live a life that is radically different than the world.
INTRODUCTION:
ILLUS: Buying a new suit of clothes and never wearing them. That would not make a lot of sense, would it?
In Christ, we have been given a new life. God instructs us to put off the old way of living and put on the new.
In these verses, Paul describes 4 aspects of the new life we have in Christ.
I) WATCH YOUR MOUTH - VS.25,29
Our words say a lot about us.
Jesus in Matthew 12:33-35 states, ‘‘Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. I heard a sermon once on that text entitled: ‘‘Watch your mouth, your heart is showing.’’
Paul instructs us to watch our mouth. What to avoid saying and what to say.
A) WHAT TO AVOID - These verses outline 2 areas of speech that should be avoided.
1. LYING - having put away falsehood.
This includes perjury - ILLUS: in the news lately there have BEEN several high profile cases of people committing perjury by lying in court or to the FBI.
Slander -
Cheating - My experience at school. If I sit down at my desk and work on something without looking up regularly, Every student in the class will make an A.
Lying is such a serious issue to God that He killed Ananias and Saphria when they lied in church in Acts 6. In I Cor. 6 one of the characteristics of an unconverted person is lying.
2. CURSING - Vs. 29 - Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouth - Corrupting is Sapros. This describes something that is rotten or spoiled.
The word refers to off-color jokes, profanity, dirty stories and anything that stinks coming out of your mouth.
Proverbs 10:32 - The lips of the righteous bring forth what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked what is perverted.
Matthew 12:33-35 . . . ‘‘Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.’’
