Prayer Rhythm Part 2 (4 of 9)
Series: Rhythm
Steve Jones
Matthew 6:9-13
SERIES SUMMARY: We all want to live an abundant life and a holy life but sometimes we struggle. To struggle less we must stay in “rhythm” with the Holy Spirit. This series is about how to stay in “rhythm” with the Holy Spirit by practicing what are traditionally known as the spiritual disciplines.
SERMON SUMMARY: This sermon deals with the Rhythm of prayer by recommending the Lord’s Prayer as a template upon which to build out our daily prayer time. One way to “build out” our daily prayer is with 1) Praise, 2) Intercession, 3) Requests, 4) Confession, and 5) Protection.
INTRODUCTION: Our current sermon series is ‘‘RHYTHM’’ in which we’re focused on those lifestyle practices that put us in synch with the Holy Spirit. We’ve talked about daily Bible reading. We’ve talked about daily prayer. But I want to do another lesson on prayer because last week was mostly the theory, theology, and motivation behind daily prayer. We said that prayer connects us to the POWER of the Holy Spirit, the HOLINESS of the Holy Spirit and the PEACE of the Holy Spirit. That’s all well and good, but we didn’t say anything about the mechanics of building out a daily prayer time. Someone walked out of one of last week’s services saying, ‘‘I still don’t know HOW to pray.’’ If that’s you, and I know it’s not everyone, you’re not alone. The disciples of Jesus didn’t know how to pray either. And so, one day they came to him and said, ‘‘Lord, teach us to pray’’ (Lk.11:1).
I want to get into some practical suggestions for making that happen. As we walk through this process, I’m going to share with you a way to build out a daily prayer using the pattern the Lord gave us. I know that not everyone can or even wants to do it this way and that is fine. But if you are in that 68% of Christians who do not have a time of prayer every day - this is A way to do it.
