Body Rhythm (6 of 9)
Series: Rhythm
Steve Jones
1 Corinthians 6:19
SERIES SUMMARY: We all want to live an abundant life and a holy life but sometimes we struggle. To struggle less we must stay in ‘‘rhythm’’ with the Holy Spirit. This series is about how to stay in ‘‘rhythm’’ with the Holy Spirit by practicing what are traditionally known as the spiritual disciplines.
SERMON SUMMARY: This sermon explores the connection between the BODY and the Holy Spirit. We are FIT for 1) Glory, 2) Joy, 3) Service, 4) Holiness.
INTRODUCTION: Okay Bible scholars, let’s begin with a Bible geography trivia question: ‘‘Where was Solomon’s temple located?’’ Answer: ‘‘On the side of his head, of course!’’ You groan now but you’ll be telling that joke all week.
Unfortunately, that’s ALL the humor I have in the message today. We’re in a sermon series entitled RHYTHM wherein we’re talking about staying connected to, in RHYTHM with, the Holy Spirit. Thus far, we’ve talked about Bible engagement, prayer, and Christian music. Today I want to talk about Holy fitness. Or perhaps we could use the term ‘‘Temple Care.’’ Our key verse that explicitly connects the BODY to the HOLY SPIRIT is I Corinthians 6:19 ‘‘Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit’’. Striving to be fit is a rhythm of the Holy Spirit. FIT is a good word for us to use as Christians. FIT for WHAT?
I. FIT FOR GLORY
I Cor.6:19-20 ‘‘Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore, GLORIFY God with your body.’’
To ‘‘glorify’’ God means to HONOR him. To show him the proper respect, esteem, and deference that He deserves. We can draw a LOT of ‘‘body theology’’ from this passage. Our bodies are meant for glorifying God not ourselves; for making GOD look good, not self look good. We have a body, however able or disabled, for his glory.
Think of the original temple built by Solomon 1000 year ...
