SERIES SUMMARY: We all want to live an abundant life and a holy life but sometimes we struggle. To struggle less we must stay in ‘‘rhythm’’ with the Holy Spirit. This series is about how to stay in ‘‘rhythm’’ with the Holy Spirit by practicing what are traditionally known as the spiritual disciplines.
SERMON SUMMARY: Once started we must carry through with the rhythms of the HS. Persevere: 1) In Daily rhythms. 2) With Identity 3) Until Inversion, 4) Again.
INTRODUCTION: Let me start today with a trivia question. You might have to be a ‘‘certain age’’ to know this one. I’m thinking of a TV series that originally ran from 1971 to 1978. The series is named after the main character - a shrewd but inelegant blue-collar homicide detective whose trademarks include his rumpled beige raincoat, unassuming demeanor, cigar, and old Peugeot 403 car. He often leaves a room only to return with the catchphrase, ‘‘Just one more thing’’ to ask a critical question. Who is he? COLUMBO.
I’m going to pull a ‘‘Columbo’’ on you today because I have ‘‘just one more thing’’ to say about ‘‘Rhythm.’’ The ‘‘one more thing’’ is perseverance.
In this ‘‘Rhythm’’ sermon series we’ve been talking about staying in rhythm with the Holy Spirit in order that our Christian lives will be marked by holiness as well as inner peace.
Rom.8:6 ‘‘If our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace.’’
In last week’s message, my goal was to motivate as many of us as possible to engage in those daily practices and get in rhythm with the Holy Spirit - to get started. In today’s message, I want to encourage all of us who have started these spiritual disciplines to persevere - to follow through and, no matter what, don’t quit. Don’t give up.
