Sorrow to Joy (14 of 21)
Series: The Upper Room
Stephen Whitney
John 16:16-24
Personal relationships give us encouragement because of the close friendships we develop. It is hard to accept someone you have
a close relationship with leave you by moving away or dying.
David and Jonathan developed a strong friendship.
II Samuel 1:26 David expressed his sorrow over his death.
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant
have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary.
We feel sorrow over losing a friendship we have had for a long time and the longer the friendship the harder it is when the person is no longer with you. Do you remember losing a close friend?
CONFUSION :16-18
Jesus often spoke in proverbs, meaning hidden sayings,
and the disciples did not understand what he was saying.
Earlier that evening as Jesus talked about leaving the disciples
he had told them, ‘‘A little while I am with you (13:33).’’
A little while - here would be less than 24 hours and he would be crucified and then put into a tomb. The second a little while refers to the resurrection which would take place a couple of days later.
Jesus doesn’t give the disciples specific times because they didn’t view time exactly the way we do. If he had given them specific times, they might not have allowed him to go to the garden where he would be arrested and then tried and condemned to death.
Note: Remember Peter tried to stop Jesus from being arrested
by using his sword to fight back (Matt. 26:51).
:17 The disciples connected what Jesus said about leaving
them with what he had said about going to the Father (:10).
That made it more difficult for them to understand what he is saying to them now because he must first die, then be raised from the dead before he ascends into heaven to be with his Father.
To the Father - was Jesus’ way of saying he was going to die,
be buried, rise from the dead and ascend back to heaven again.
