We’re in a series on Sunday mornings called Family Foundations. We’re talking about how the Word of God lays the foundation for the way our families operate. The Bible gives us what we need to have the kind of family we desire to have.
Today, from 1 Samuel 2:12-30, I’m talking about The Challenge of Parenting. We’re going to look at a pastor’s family that was a big mess. This pastor’s name was Eli. He didn’t control his kids. His made a big mess of his family. READ 12-17, 22-25, 27-30
*Let’s be honest, parenting is a challenge! Some of you like a good challenge. For instance, some of you love to do crossword puzzles. You can’t wait to get the newspaper and do the crossword every day. Or now, of course, there’s an app with an endless amount of crossword puzzles. You just love a good challenge. And now, there’s a new challenge out there called ‘‘Wordle!’’ I had no idea what was going on but people just starting putting posts on social media with a group of boxes. Some of the boxes were blank, some were yellow, some were green. And then, for some reason, we were supposed to be proud of them because they got all green boxes. What in the world? Well, I later learned that they discovered the secret word of the day. And apparently if you do that, it’s required to post it on social media because that’s what everyone does. Then, others of you like this challenge called, sudoku. Can I ask you just one question? WHY?!?! You say, ‘‘Oh, I just love it. It’s so fun and relaxing.’’ Are you serious? When I want to relax, I want to turn my brain OFF. I don’t want to do complicated math projects. Others of you say, well, I’m not into any of that. I like a good physical challenge. I’ve decided to run a marathon. Do you know how long a marathon is? It’s 26.2 miles. And you say, ‘‘Well, I just love a good challenge. I’m training for a marathon.’’ Seriously? There ...
