What If

Matthew 13:31ff / 17:14-20
This morning, I ask this question, ‘‘But What If?’’ It’s thought provoking. What if! Questions are the pathway that leads us to the answers we ‘‘NEED’’ and the places we need to go. Last week was full of questions, ‘‘What is it that excites you or gets you excited?’’ ‘‘Are you living and walking after the flesh or the Spirit?’’ To all the questions of last week, ‘‘What if’’ is a great follow up question. I want you to think about the ‘what if’ question, candidly, I have this entire week as I listened to the McKameys sing this simply lyric multiple times.
For me, the lyrics are very well crafted to deliver the powerful message. But the part which always kind of gut punches me is - SCREEN
‘‘But what if...when we stand before our Maker instead of hearing ‘‘You’ve been faithful’’ as we give account for every word and deed.
He says ‘‘Child, I had so much in store, if only you had trusted more. It only takes the faith of a mustard seed. What if, if only you believe.’’
Candidly - I have sat in services where you are seated and kind of tuned out a message like this, but THIS MESSAGE HITS HARD. We will give an account to God and we want to, in fact we expect to hear ‘‘You’ve been faithful, well done’’, don’t we? Never forget, to get a well done, but must do well IN HIS EYES. Hebrews 6 tells us this, ‘‘Without faith, it is impossible to please God.’’ Jesus repeatedly speaks of ‘‘mustard seed’’ faith, so He’s not talking about a faith that is full-grown, Jesus never expected that. But He did and does expect our faith, our faith-walk to grow.
That makes the ‘what if’ question a powerful question. It has the power to derail your life, if you look through the rear glass of your life at your past which is full of ‘whatifs and ifonlys’. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, HISTORY IS DONE. You cannot go back and change the whatifs, so find peace with God over the past. If you’ve wronged someone or done somethi ...
