First Things First

1. Over the past few weeks we have been thinking about "First Things First." We have been looking at some of the "firsts" in the Bible and considering certain things that are to be priorities in our life. I want us to look at one more "first." The subject I want us to look at today is quite different than the previous "firsts" we have considered. The five "firsts" we have looked at have to do primarily with our relationship to God. The final "first" that I want us to consider has to do with our relationship with others.
2. I once heard about a fellow that was marooned on a deserted island. After living alone for several years on the island he was rescued. When his rescuers came ashore they noticed that there were three huts on the island. They were somewhat puzzled why there were three huts considering the man was the only one on the island. They asked, "What is that hut?" He said, "That's my house. That is where I have lived all these years." He was asked about the second hut. He said, "That is where I go to church." He was then asked about the third hut. He answered, "Oh, that's where I used to go to church."
3. I have met a few people through the years that could not get along with themselves, much less others. In the scripture before us, Jesus deals with our relationship with others. He specifically talks about judging others. He is talking about those who sit on their self-righteous perch, milking their sanctimonious chin and looking down their holier than thou nose on others, judging them and criticizing them. As Jesus speaks of judging others, He tells us that there is something that we should do "first." He says in verse 5, "first cast out the beam out of thine own eye."
4. Now we all have met and known those who were always judging and criticizing others. I heard about one evangelist that was standing at the back door with the pastor after the service shaki ...
