Introduction
Funny thing, last week. Valentine’s Day was Monday, and of course that meant parties for the kids at school and so I was tasked with buying Valentines for them to give to their classmates. I naturally waited until the last moment, arriving at Walmart and the entire aisle was picked clean. Like the best option was sending my 9-year-old son to school with Care Bear valentines, a fate I wouldn’t wish upon even the Devil himself. I thought to myself, what would my mom do, and I was like, ‘Oh yeah, she took us to the pharmacy to buy valentines when I was a kid ... Walgreens for the save and the win! But it was funny as I stood at Walmart surveying the depleted stock, there were a number of men doing the same thing, except clearly looking for last minute gifts and cards for their wives. Like Jesus looking upon the crowds, I stood there in my righteousness and felt compassion for these suckers, as I had once been in their shoes. Not this year, though. This year I did something for the first time in fifteen years; I actually had planned a date and arranged for a babysitter for Valentine’s Day weekend.
You see, Valentine’s Day has never been a particular talent of mine. A lot of it is just that I don’t like holidays being forced on me and second, I’m just bad at holidays. I struggle with slowing down and stopping for something and, really, it’s pretty awful. Maybe I’m softening up as time goes by but I have come to understand better over time that even though each day is a good day to express your love for your significant other, that embracing a holiday and doing something unique is important as well.
