Introduction
Recently, we finally showed Aiden, our nine-year-old, the original Jurassic Park. I was worried that it might be too tense or frightening at points, but he’s seen so many commercials for the new Jurassic Park movie coming out in the spring that he was eager to watch and so we gave it a try. I was really excited, actually, to show him the movie because of how much I loved it as a kid. I mean do you remember the awe you felt when seeing the brontosauruses on the big screen? Visually, Jurassic Park was the most incredible thing I had ever experienced! Or just how tense you felt with the raptors in the kitchen scene. I thought to myself, ‘This movie is going to blow Aiden’s mind,’.
He was underwhelmed.
But it makes sense. The technology that took our breath away in 1993 doesn’t quite wow the kids anymore. (Like I walked into the room the other day and Aiden was playing NBA2k and at first glance I thought he was watching a real basketball game; the graphics these days are amazing.) I also think I probably over hyped the movie so Aiden was expecting to feel how I did in the early 90s. I set the expectations so high that he was disappointed. But that often happens to us. I think about how excited I was for the new Star Wars movies to come out seven years ago and how I didn’t want to admit it at the time but how disappointed I was in all three films (which wasn’t just based on my high expectations and excitement but also because the movies were dumb). We get disappointed because we have such high hopes for something and it never turns out quite like we hoped.
Except for the things of God.
It turns out that we can never be disappointed by God’s promises. But also, we can never have high enough expectations, because God’s plans and his works far exceed all that we could ask or imagine! Whatever we can dream up for ourselves, for others, for ...
