Introduction

Though my wife would adamantly disagree with me, I believe that Les Misérables is the greatest modern-day musical ever produced and performed. That’s no shade to other great works, but Les Mis triumphs in its one-two punch of the incredible story of redemption, written by French novelist Victor Hugo, combined with incredible, moving music. If you haven’t yet, you need to read the book (I know it’s long but you can do it) and if you have the opportunity you need to see the musical performed live on stage. The movie is good and YouTube videos are fine, but live ... there’s nothing like it.

Les Mis features a number of different characters and plot lines, but the heart of the story centers around Jean Valjean, who though hardened by the world and its injustices, experiences forgiveness and redemption and an opportunity for new life. Seeing his life as now belonging to God, Valjean commits himself to doing right, righting any wrongs, trying to show the grace he’s received to others. This is seen most notably in his adoption of Cosette, the orphaned daughter of Fantine, a deceased employee of his. While living out his years hiding his true identity and past, he raises Cosette as his own daughter according to the promise he made to Fantine on her deathbed.

Valjean is a remarkable character whose life is radically transformed by grace. It’s something that intrinsic to the Gospel, for while Hugo himself by all indications was not a practicing follower of Jesus Christ, this story very much reflects the major themes of Scripture and the Christian faith, namely how forgiveness and redemption are free gifts of grace that, once received, are to be shown to others freely as well, a truth very much encapsulated within today’s passage.
