Matthew 6:9
Matthew 6:9 - "Hallowed be thy name..."
Many people see prayer as a way of getting things from God. The purpose of prayer is not primarily for us to gain what we think we need; it's for God to have an opportunity to manifest His glory. If we never gain anything from prayer but the opportunity to commune with God, then that should be sufficient for us.
You see - the priority of prayer is to do exactly what Jesus told us to do. He told us: "The first petition we are to address to our Father, if you are to pray rightly, does not concern your own needs. It concerns Him. Proper prayer begins with a desire that the name of God be hallowed."
It is little wonder that among the first Ten Commandments given by God to men there should have included, "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain." (Exodus 20:7)
I. CHARACTER OF GOD'S NAME
"Thy name" - God's name - implies more than just a title or a person. His name carries with it the very character of God that describes all of His power - all of His person - and all of His purity.
The first request of the Lord's Prayer is on God's behalf. There are other requests in the prayer that focus on God: "Thy kingdom come" and "Thy will be done." (v. 10)
Next - we see requests made on our behalf: "Give us this day... Forgive us our debts...And lead us not into temptation." (v. 11-13)
The prayer concludes by focusing on God again: "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever." (v. 13)
This entire prayer reflects the character of "Our Father, who art in heaven."
But look at the contrast. As we pray, realizing the character of God as it related to His power...His person...and His purity - it should cause us to see who we are in comparison.
Without His power - we can do nothing.
Without His person - we are nothing.
Without His purity - we are as filthy rags.
That's wh ...
