In The Meantime
James Merritt
Micah 6:8
Introduction
1. Something wonderful and something kind of strange happened to me when I was nine years old. It happens to everyone who makes the decision to become a follower of Jesus. I, as you know, accepted Jesus Christ into my life as a nine year old boy in a movie theater, in Gainesville, Georgia. I didn’t even realize at the time what a wonderful thing had happened to me, but looking back on it, in a way, something strange happened immediately afterward. I was not immediately taken into heaven! Unless you are on your deathbed or you are a thief being crucified next to Jesus on a cross just moments before death you are not either.
2. It didn’t hit me at the time, but as I thought about it the question arose, ‘‘If God loves me so much that he sent Jesus to die for me and he wants to take me to heaven, why doesn’t he go ahead and do it?’’ The very fact that he doesn’t tells me that he still has something for me to do on this earth. He still has a life he wants me to live here and now. You can summarize the life of a Christian up in three words ‘‘in the meantime.’’ In the meantime, between the time that you are saved and the time he takes you to heaven, what does God want from you? What does God expect from you? What is the life that God wants you to live? You don’t have to wonder, because there is a magnificent verse in the Old Testament where God specifically tells us what he requires of us. [Turn to Micah 6:8].
3. Here is a little education. The last twelve books of the Old Testament were written by prophets and they are called ‘‘the minor prophets.’’ Most Christians can’t name them and most Christians probably haven’t read much of them. Let’s be honest. You are more likely to have read Matthew than you are Micah, John than you have Joel, Acts than you have Amos. Yet, some of the greatest biblical principles and truth found anywhere in scripture are found in these books which are anything but minor.
