Putting Your Foot Down
James Merritt
Daniel 1
Introduction
1. I was 17 years old and I was a nervous wreck. I couldn’t eat and sleep came at a premium. Just the thought of the day that was to soon arrive made me sick to my stomach. When that dreaded day finally came I woke up early and began to silently cry. It was the day i was leaving home for college.
2. I was a mama’s boy and had never been away from home. I was going almost 500 miles from home to a college campus I had never even seen, where i knew absolutely no one, knowing I wouldn’t be back home before Thanksgiving.
3. For the first time in my life, I would be completely on my own. No one to make sure I would go to class much less to go to school. No one to make sure i went to church. No one to do my laundry, set my schedule, or hold me accountable in any way. Now what was to be was up to me.
4. AND I MADE ONE BIG DECISION BEFORE I LEFT HOME THAT SET THE TONE FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS OF MY LIFE. I DECIDED TO PUT MY FOOT DOWN.THIS PHRASE CAME FROM THE 18TH CENTURY. PEOPLE REALIZED THAT IT IS OBSERVABLE THAT WHEN YOU CLUMP OR TRAMP YOUR FOOT ON GROUND, YOU LEAVE A PRINT. IT CAME TO MEAN THAT IF YOU SET A RULE OR CERTAIN PRINCIPLE AND DEMAND OTHERS TO OBEY IT, THEN YOU ‘‘PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN.’’ YOU ARE FIRM IN DOING SOMETHING.
5. I got this idea from a 14-year-old high school student by the name of Daniel. [Turn to Daniel 1]. His story takes place about 2600 years ago. The year is around 605 BC and this is how we are introduced to his situation.
‘‘In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia[a] and put in the treasure house of his god.’’ (Daniel 1:1-2, NIV)
