Introduction

1. There are some meetings and moments that are absolutely life-changing. For me, the most important moment was when I truly met Jesus in a movie theater and realized I was a sinner who needed a Savior and surrendered my life to him as my Lord. Another moment was when a nineteen year old girl stood up out of a chair and turned to face me and I met my wife and the mother of my children and my best friend. The third moment was a meeting I had with Dr. Adrian Rogers.

2. I spent almost a half day with him in his office and he taught me more about how to pastor and preach in half a day than I learned in seven years at a seminary.

3. I will remember something he said when he was talking about how difficult ministry is and demanding it is and how pressure packed it is. Then he said this, ‘‘Remember. You don’t want to burn out and you don’t want to rust out. You want to last out.’’

4. Ever since he said that to me, I’ve learned firsthand that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to burn out in ministry. The stress of ministry can be unrelenting, but that is not a problem unique to my work. Do either of these three words relate to you ever?

Overworked
Overcommitted

5. In a study of 7,500 full-time American employees, more than seventy percent of adults in their twenties and thirties are experiencing at least some level of burnout. That means the vast majority of people are just about to crash and burn before they hit their fortieth birthday and it doesn’t always get better with age. If you feel like me sometimes you feel like you are all stressed up and you’ve got no place to go.
