Introduction

1. After the Civil War two of the most popular men in the northern United States were the two leading generals of the Union Army: Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman. Grant went on to become the President of the United States. Although Sherman probably had a clear path to the White House himself, but when asked in 1884 if he would run for the presidency he famously said, ‘‘I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected.’’ It became famously known as the ‘‘Sherman pledge.’’ Even if the general were alive today, he would probably make the same statement even more emphatically.

2. The presidency of the United States is considered, perhaps, the most stressful job on earth. In fact, there was an article in the Atlantic Magazine by John Vickerson entitled, ‘‘The Hardest Job in the World,’’ which is based on a book with that same title written by Dickerson. Just think about the office -
Chief of State - The President’s job itself
Chief Executive - He is the head of the executive branch so he is responsible for the job of all executive’s in his constituency.
Chief Administrator- He is the head of government
Chief Diplomat - He is responsible for foreign issues and domestic issues
Chief Legislator - He is the head of laws, which can only pass with his signature
Chief of Party - He is the figurehead of his political party.

3. You talk about stressful! No man or woman can possibly represent 327 million citizens with all the different opinions and interests they have. How can any man or woman manage an Executive Branch of 2 million employees which doesn’t even include the largest military in the world? It shouldn’t surprise us that the President of the United States lives 2.7 fewer years than the average person and has a twenty-three percent higher risk of premature death.
