Philippians 4:4-7

Introduction

1. When I was a very small child, my wonderful, godly mother went through an episode in her life that was terrifying and rocked her world. It was so horrific it woke her up in the middle of the night, she sat up in the bed, and began to weep uncontrollably. She went through a time of several months that drove her into a dark place that almost crushed her. When she was sleeping, the thought came into her mind, ‘‘There is no God and you are going to hell.’’ From that moment, every day two demonic dogs followed her everywhere she went. One was the dog of doubt and the other was the dog of despair. It was the first time in her life that she doubted the existence of God and for the first time in her life she despaired that she would die and spend eternity in that awful place. She couldn’t sleep. She began to lose her hair. She lost her appetite. She didn’t want to be around people. She would walk the floor and break out into a sweat. A wonderful godly pastor helped pull her through this and out of this over time, but what began as just a trickle of worry, soon turned into a tsunami of what today would be called ‘‘acute anxiety.’’

2. Today it would be called ‘‘Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).’’ It can as it did with Mom, last for months. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, GAD includes feeling restless, fatigued, irritability, excess feelings of worry that are difficult to control, difficulty with sleeping and difficulty in functioning.

3. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders are reaching epidemic proportions. In a given year, nearly 50 million Americans will feel the effects of a panic attack, phobias, or other anxiety disorders. In fact, anxiety disorders in the United States are the ‘‘number one mental health problem among... women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men.’’
