Introduction

1. Channelview, Texas, is a quiet middleclass suburb of Houston, made up of nice homes, nice cars and nice families, but years ago this entire community was turned upside down by a story that is still hard to believe and it all stems from a cheerleading competition.

2. Amber Heath and Shanna Holloway lived right around the corner from each other and had been friends for years. Amber was president of the Student Council and Shanna was vice president. Their mothers were great friends. The girls both went to the same private Christian school. The moms even took turns driving the kids to school and everything was fine between these families until the sixth grade. That is when Amber beat out Shanna for a cheerleading spot.

3. The two girls had always competed against each other, but Amber had been competing in beauty contests since she was four and she always seemed to get the edge over Shanna. Shanna’s mother, who attended a local evangelical church several times a week and was the church organist, began to resent her daughter always losing out to Amber.

4. She even tried unsuccessfully to get Shanna disqualified from the cheerleading competition by invoking a technicality in the rules. One year she showed up at school the day students were voting for cheerleader candidates and handed out rulers and pencils with this slogan, ‘‘Shanna Holloway - Cheerleader.’’ But, as a result of her mother’s actions, Shanna was disqualified.

5. Finally, for Shanna’s mother it all hit the boiling point. She couldn’t take it any longer. She tried to hire a hitman to kill both Amber and her mother. While she was trying to find someone to do it, she mentioned it to her former brother-in-law who notified the police who wired an officer who posed as the hitman. According to the tape recording, the hitman told her he would kill the mother for $5000 and the daught ...
