Introduction

1. One of the most popular tourist attractions in America is Yellowstone National Park. People from America to around the world love to go there, but there is one particular place in Yellowstone National Park that only the most adventurous and hardiest of hikers try to get to and it is called ‘‘Thorofare Ranger Station.’’ It is in the southeast corner of the park. If you are a ranger and you are assigned to this station, you will drive about fifteen miles from the park, then get on horseback and you will travel thirty-two miles into the wilderness which is the shortest route to get to the station. For a serious hiker, this will be on your bucket list, but why?

2. Susan Balswell, President of Carto Graphic Technologies in Vermont was asked by an automobile maker to find a place in the United States that is most distant from a publicly maintained road. That spot is this ranger station which is twenty-five miles from any road as the raven flies.

3. The closest trail from the road to the center of this point is thirty-two miles. From the sky, it is the dark spot on the map. There are no lights here. It is a place where time is measured only by moons and seasons. Now what is it about this place that is so attractive to hikers? Why would anybody want to go here? Because it is the most remote place in the continuous forty-eight states, the farthest you can go to get away from it all, the only place you can be more than twenty miles from a road. If you want to go somewhere where you are alone that is the place to go.

4. However, though that may be the most remote place in the continental United States, the most remote place in the world is in the heart of a lonely person.
