For the next little bit we are going to be looking at the life and ministry of Elisha and the events surrounding it. - Elisha was the prophet that succeeded Elijah after Elijah was taken up to Heaven. We looked at the life and ministry of Elijah last fall and now we take a look at Elisha. Elijah’s name meant... The Lord is God or Yahweh is God. - Elisha’s name means ‘‘God saves.’’ - He too was a bold prophet and used mightily by God. - We see today that his being used by God be- began with a very simple word ... SURRENDER. - Elisha was a surrendered man. He was all-in.
Since I know you remember everything about last fall’s Elijah series I probably don’t need to review any. You probably have a note sheet there in your Bible! But in case you don’t ... Elijah the prophet of God ministered during an idolatrous time in Israel’s history. His ministry proclaimed Yahweh as the One true God and served as a rebuke to those that followed false gods like Baal. In particular much of his ministry was during the reign of wicked King Ahab and his evil wife Jezebel. Elijah confronted the idolatry of his day. Baal was a fertility god and people looked to him for rain. So God sent a DROUGHT. It would only rain when Elijah said so. On Mt. Carmel there was a show down between Elijah and the prophets of Baal. God showed up and showed out ... fire rain down from Heaven. The prophets of Baal were slaughtered, the drought ends, rain returns - Jezebel is angry. She vows to kill E ...
