For many adults, attending the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA or seeing a show on Broadway in New York, is what going to Disney World is for children!

*You purchase your tickets in advance.

*You plan your schedule so not to be late.

*You pick out what clothes you’re going to wear.

*You park your vehicle in the closest parking spot.

*You proceed into the theatre, anticipating the show.

Once you find your seat, soon the lights begin to dim, the crowd quickly becomes silent as if someone flipped a light switch, the master of ceremony walks to center stage and suddenly from above, a bright spotlight zeros’ in on them as they welcome everyone to the presentation.

That moment was made possible by American inventor Louis Hartmann, who in 1879 invented the spotlight. Louis Hartmann, according to his friend David Belasco, ‘‘was an expert in lights, shading and coloring, an artist who painted with light-beams and diffused glows instead of pigments and brushes.

In describing Hartmann’s philosophy, he says, ‘‘Lights are to drama what music is to the lyrics of a song. No other factor that enters the production of a play is so effective in conveying its moods and feelings. They are as essential to every work of dramatic art as blood is to life.

Hartmann’s invention of the spotlight forever changed films, theatre productions, plays and more. The spotlight draws our attention to one location or spot on the stage, blacking out the rest of the set. Yes, there may be other props and people on the stage, but for that moment, our attention is focused on that one spot!

Now with our Bibles opened to Matthew 26, the spotlight lands today upon a very special place, a very sacred place, a very serene place and of course I’m talking about the Garden of Gethsemane. Today, from Gethsemane, the spotlight is not only on a place, but also on a person:
