Opening Comments: Last week Andrew preached on how we fit into and order our physical family life. This week we are going to look at how we order and fit into our spiritual family, specifically, looking at spiritual gifts.

Introduction: Presbyterians are scared to death of...the Holy Spirit.
Context of Passage: the Corinthian church was a mess. They were extremely disorganized and were struggling with many different issues. There were: Divisions in the church Sexual immorality lawsuits among believers marriage problems Idolatry and even a misunderstanding about the Lord’s Supper
The apostle Paul writes this letter to address these issues AND to pull the church together. He starts his unification process in Chapter 12 by teaching about the church being the body of Christ and how each member of the church has spiritual gifts that will support and build up the church. He then drives home the overarching theme of loving one another in one of the most famous chapters in the Bible, ch. 13.
Transition: This morning we are going to focus on understanding the church as the body of Christ, how spiritual gifts are involved, and the impact that they make. So, let’s jump right in:
What is a Spiritual Gift and Why does God give them to us?
Definition: a spiritual gift is a special burden and ability that is empowered by the Holy Spirit and used in any ministry of the church. According to v. 7 Spiritual gifts are used for the common good and According to 1 Cor. 14: 26 Spiritual gifts are for the building up and edification of the church.
Remember, the ‘‘body of believers’’ makes up the ‘‘body of Christ’’ and so ALL the members of the body, work together for the sake of the entire body, not for the sake of itself. We need each other. We have been created by God to be interdependent, meaning we depend on each other. I need you and your gifts to be built up and grow in Christ and ...
