John 15:12-17
Our English word friend comes from the root word to love because a friend is someone who loves you. Webster defines a friend as: one attached to another by affection or has esteem for another.
Samuel Coleridge (d.1834), was an English poet who wrote,
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. He suffered from arthritis,
depression and loneliness. He wrote, “Your trust in friends
and theirs in you, will grow as will your hope for the future –
because friendship really is a sheltering tree.”
True friendship supports another when they are going through difficult times. Jonathan stood by David when his father Saul wanted to kill David because he was jealous of him.
Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times.
They care about you no matter what happens in your life.
Proverbs 18:24 There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
You choose to be a friend, while you are born into a family.
What qualities make someone a good friend?
They accept you as you are.
They care about you personally.
They share common interests with you.
They listen to what you have to say.
They are there for you no matter what.

When Jesus said that one of them would betray him the disciples
began to question one another if it was one of them.
Luke 22:24 A dispute also arose among the disciples,
as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
Our pride causes us to think that we are better than others
or to desire a position which recognizes our significance.
