John 15:1-6

Vineyards were common throughout the Promised Land.
Numbers 13:23 When the 12 spies when into the promised land they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes and they carried it on a pole between them because it was so large.
God was showing his people the blessings they would
receive when they entered the Promised Land.

Grapes are the fruit produced by the branches of the vines.
As a new stem grows it produces a flower which when exposed
to the sunlight causes the flower to develop a cluster of grapes.

It has been estimated that the largest clusters of grapes produced
in Israel can weigh between 10 and 12 pounds with some of the grapes as large as a small plum. Normal size grapes are about
one inch in size and it takes about 65 to make a pound.

Grapes are only produced when they are attached to the vine.
Apart from Christ we are not able to develop any spiritual fruit.
Our individual efforts are useless unless we are nourished by him.
We are only nourished by Christ as we continually abide in him.

Background
In the OT Israel was pictured as a vine because it represented the great favors God had chosen to bestow on his people in taking them out of slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land.

Psalm 80:8-9 You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and you planted it . . . it took deep root and filled the land.

Isaiah 5:1-2 My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.
He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines
. . . he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes.

The nation of Israel never became what God intended them to be,
which was a light to the nations around them of the goodness
and grace of God so they would trust him instead of idols.
