We’re in a sermon series on Sundays called, Love Where You Live. We’re talking about what it means to love our neighbors and the nations with the gospel of Jesus Christ in simple, practical, and compelling ways. This is so much more than a sermon series. Today, we’re going to study a passage of Scripture known as The Great Commission. It’s found in Matthew 28:19-20 and it’s one of the foundational passages for the New Testament church. In fact, this is why the church exists. It’s the reason we’re here. READ TEXT
*In his excellent book Start with Why, Simon Sinek reveals that it is crucial to know your ‘‘why.’’ In fact, he says that knowing the answer to the question, ‘‘why?’’ is more important than knowing the answer to the questions, ‘‘what’’ or ‘‘how.’’ What does he mean? It’s important to know why you exist, why you’re here, and why you’ve been put on this earth. Only then can you answer the other questions that should follow. Essentially, he reminds us that everything we do flows from the purpose for which we were created. In his book he shows that vision is why the Wright brothers succeeded in being the first to build an airplane that could fly. It is a very interesting story, for there was another person who set out to build an airplane at the same time, and he was much better funded. His name was Samuel Pierpont Langley, and he was seemingly ‘‘armed with every ingredient for success.’’ Langley was a professor at Harvard and senior officer at the Smithsonian. He was given a grant of $50,000 from the War Department (which is many million in today’s dollars) and assembled a team of some of the best talent of the day.
