Introduction Hey welcome to Mission Hills. Whether you’re joining us on-campus on on-line, it’s an honor to have you with us today as we dive into a new message series on the 10 commandments. By the way, if you’ve been with us over the past few months, you might be wondering what the heck we’re doing. We just finished a series on the book of Galatians where we saw the principle, over and over again, that rules don’t create relationship. And now we’re going to turn around and do an entire series on ‘‘the rules’’? What gives, right? Well here’s the thing: rules don’t create relationships, they regulate them. They point us towards what those relationships looks like when they’re healthy and they give us rails to run on as we move towards that. And the right rules actually make our relationships better. 28 years ago this November, I married the love of my life. Her name’s Coletta. Now because I’m married to Coletta, there are some rules I follow...rules that regulate the relationship. I don’t date other women. I don’t spend time alone with other women. I don’t entertain attraction to other women in-person, on a screen or in my imagination. I also choose to live with a lot more pillows than I ever thought possible. Guys, am I right? Like way more than I thought possible. And more kinds than I ever knew existed. There’s throw pillows which you are not allowed to throw...that’s another rule. And there’s sham pillows...which are the only ones honestly named, by the way! You get the point. Because I have this relationship, there rules that regulate it. Ok, but lets imagine I was still single and I decided to follow those rules. I didn’t date anyone else and I didn’t think about anyone else and I went to Home Goods and I cleaned out their pillow section....would I be married to Coletta? Of course not. Because rules don’t create relationship...they can only regulate a relationship that alread ...
