Introduction Well, thank you for joining us today. We’re on week number three of our deep dive into the 10 commandments. If you’re just joining us, here’s probably the most important thing you need to know. A lot of people think of the 10 commandments like the entrance exam for heaven. They’re like the checklist for getting on God’s good side. But one of the most incredible truths we find in the bible is that, With God, belonging doesn’t depend on behaving. A relationship with God doesn’t start with behaving according to God’s rules...it starts with believing in God’s son, Jesus. It starts with putting our trust, our faith, in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. So one of the things that we say here a lot is that belonging depends on believing...so does that mean that behaving doesn’t matter? Does it mean God doesn’t care about how we behave? Not at all! It’s just that behaving isn’t the road to belonging...it’s the result of it. So we say: believing -> belonging -> behaving. And it’s only through that lens that we can really understand the rules. As we said a couple of weeks ago as we started this series, rules don’t create relationships, they regulate them. They keep them moving in the right direction and keep them from going off the rails. The 10 commandments are intended to keep our relationship with God moving forward into everything God has for us, including joy. Now today we’re going to tackle the third commandment. So if you want to grab a bible and start making your way there, we’re going to be in Exodus 20:7. And in my opinion, this is the most misunderstood of the Big Ten. And that misunderstanding has done two things. Number one, it’s hurt the cause of Christ. It’s slowed-down the advancement of the Gospel.
