Exodus 20:12
Introduction Hey, thanks for joining us today. This weekend is the half-way point in our deep dive into the 10 commandments. And I think that’s a good time to tell you two things you might not know about the ten commandments. Two things that are helpful in understanding all of the 10 commandments, but are crucial in understanding the fifth commandment that we’re going to dig into today. The first one is this: each of the ten commandments is a first step, not a finish line. In other words, the 10 commandments are where we start to live a righteous and joy-filled life, but they aren’t the end of it. And you can see this most clearly in how Jesus taught about the ten commandments. He said, you’ve heard it said that you shall not murder, but I tell you anyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgement. See, not murdering someone is just the minimum first step...the finish line is being free from anger and bitterness and resentment all together. Jesus said, you’ve heard it said, you shall not commit adultery...but I say that if you’re looking at someone with lust in your heart, it’s basically the same thing. See, not committing adultery is the minimum first step...the finish line is not entertaining attraction to anyone other than your spouse. And we’ve taken this same approach to all of the ten commandments. That’s why we didn’t just talk about having no other Gods...we talked about making God your priority in every area of life. It’s why we didn’t just talk about not using God’s name to prop up our reputation...we talked about becoming someone whose reputation doesn’t need propping up. Because each of the ten commandments is a first step, not the finish line. Now the second thing you might not know about the ten commandments has to do with the way they’re organized. And basically, the first five are about loving God and the second five are about loving other ...
