Introduction Hey, thank you so much for joining us today. If you don’t already know, we’re in the midst of a series on the 10 commandments and there are a couple of things you might want to know. These are things we’ve been saying throughout this series and they create a really important framework for understanding each of the ten commandments. The first thing you’re going to want to know is that rules don’t create relationships, they regulate them. Following the ten commandments doesn’t create a relationship with God. Our relationship with God doesn’t come from following the rules...it comes from faith. It comes from trusting God and the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Following the 10 commandments doesn’t create a relationship with God, but the commandments do regulate that relationship with God we have by faith. They keep the relationship headed in the right direction and they keep us centered where all the good things God created for us can be experienced and enjoyed. That’s why we’ve called this series ‘‘Ancient Rules for Modern Joy.’’ Now, the second thing you’re going to want to know about the ten commandments is that each commandment is a first step, not a finish line. What I mean is that each commandment points us in the right direction and they start us moving forward, but they’re not the end goal...they’re not the finish line. And that’s really easy to see with the seventh commandment that we’re going to look at today.

If you want to grab a bible, we’re going to be looking at Exodus 20:14. Here’s the seventh commandment: 14 ‘‘You shall not commit adultery. (Exo 20:14) Now, that’s pretty straight-forward, right? Don’t commit adultery. In other words, if you’re married, don’t go sleeping with someone you’re not married to. That’s pretty straight-forward, but it’s also a pretty low standard, right?
