James 1:19-21
Our Pentagon is supposedly the center for the military actions and readiness. To keep us ready, they are known for using the acronym DEFCON to describe our 'Defense Ready Condition''. It's literally a countdown from 5 to 1. At 5, all is well; at 1, we Nuclear war is imminent. Our defense department should be ready at all times. If you are interested the Defcon level today is 3 (Condition Yellow). (according to defconlevel.com) This means we have raised the level to be on alert.
In the same way our defense department stays on guard for our defense needs and enemy attack, we need to stay on guard in our lives for attacks of the enemy. Our enemy goes by many names (Satan, Lucifer, liar, deceivers, Daystar), we need to be on alert. They say, ''the best defense is a good offense.'' This truth confronts, calls, and challenges us to raise the level of our Everyday Christianity so we will be on alert and ready for the attacks of the devil. James is really beginning to get on our nerves because he's getting up in our faces as he attempts to get us to raise the level of our faith and commitment to a new place. Last week we looked at verse 19.
Reform the Wickedness - vs19 - James laid out the behavior for the child of God: ''quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger'' which is the opposite of human behavior, which is, slow to hear, quick to speak, and ready to be angry.''
Today, let focus on the next two verses.... These two verses are interesting.
Reject the Wantonness - vs 20a and 21a - I use the word wantonness which means the impiety, depravity, and shamelessness, which goes by another word - SIN. (shameless vs shameful) He begins with ''human anger'' (20a) and then speaks of 'moral filth and evil' (21a). He says, one doesn't ''accomplish'' (achieve, produce, worketh) not God's righteousness.
