John Ashcroft had just moved from Missouri to Washington D.C., to become a Senator. The night before he was sworn in to the Senate in 1995, his father arranged for some close friends and family - maybe fifteen to twenty people - to gather for dinner. His father asked John to play one of his favorite songs on the piano: We Are Standing On Holy Ground.

We are standing on holy ground and I know there are angels all around. Let us praise Jesus now we are standing in his presence on holy ground. We are standing in his presence; we are standing in his presence. We are standing in his presence on holy ground.

The next morning as the family gathered together his father said, ‘‘Please listen carefully. The spirit of Washington is arrogance and the spirit of Christ is humility. Put on the spirit of Christ. Nothing of lasing value has ever been accomplished in arrogance. Someday I hope that someone will come up to you as you’re fulfilling your duties as a senator, tug on your sleeve and say, ‘Senator, your spirit (humility) is showing.’’’

Jesus wants us to humbly serve the needs of others.

POSITION :12-13 After washing the feet of the disciples, Jesus goes back and sits down at the table where they have been eating the Passover meal. A hush must have settled over the room. None of the disciples speak a word because they are too astonished about what Jesus has just done and in the silence, he asks them a question.

Do you understand what I have done - is a rhetorical question. In the next verse you notice that he answers the question. Jesus wants them to think about the reason he washed their feet. He wants them to see the significance of what he did to them.
