Terry Smith, Wycliffe translator in Peru, was conducting a workshop on the translation of the book of Job. When he saw Rufina there he wondered why she had come because she was not part of the translation team. During a lunch break someone told him that she wanted to talk to him. As he turned to look at her and she tilted up her blind eyes to his face, handed him a homespun shawl and whispered, ‘‘Thank you for loving my children.’’ Stunned by her words, he thought about loving her children: What had he done to elicit such a remark from this woman’s heart? All he had done was include two of her sons as full participants in the translation team (even though they are blind and socially marginalized because of their disabilities). All we had done was to keep her daughter as part of the team preparing Bible story books in Quechua (when as a single mom she was ostracized). Rufina has never seen him with her eyes, but her heart has seen the love we have for her children.
