The Resurrection -- The Big ‘‘IF’’
David Davis
I Corinthians 15:13
I Corinthians 15:13 - ‘‘But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:’’ Have you ever considered how the Christian life would be affected if Jesus had not been resurrected from the grave? The fact is there would be no Christian life. There would be no victory. There would be no hope. Some of the people in Corinth had questioned the resurrection. In essence they had said to him, ‘‘There is no such thing as the resurrection of the dead.’’
To this Paul answers, I Corinthians 15:12 - ‘‘Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?’’ Job asked that question centuries ago when he said in Job 14:14 - ‘‘lf a man die, shall he live again?’’ This is the oldest question ever pondered by the human mind, the oldest question ever debated by human beings. If a man die, will he live again? You find that there were people in the Bible who didn’t believe in the resurrection. Some people were constant thorns in the side of Jesus, constant enemies of our Lord while He was here on this earth.
There were the Sadducees who said that there was nothing miraculous; everything could be rationalized, explained; nothing was supernatural. The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection of the body from the grave. Nor did they believe in angels. Luke 20:27 - ‘‘Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection.’’ Mark 5 gives us story in the life of Jesus when he raised up a little 12-year-old girl from the dead. Jesus told them that she was not dead - but sleepeth. What did the people do? The Bible says they ‘‘laughed him to scorn.’’ They made fun of Him. They began asking - ‘‘What can You do about death?’’
Here is the Son of God; here is the Resurrection; here is the Author of all life - people laughed at Him and said, ‘‘There is no such thing as one who was dead coming back ...
