2 Chronicles 14-16
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, that began on February 22, 2022, has captured the attention of the world. It is a modern-day David and Goliath conflict; Russian being Goliath and Ukraine being David. We all know how that turned out. You can know that the book writers and movie producers are watching the current conflict with great interest.
Russia is not new to war nor peace. Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 was the setting for Leo Tolstoy's classic novel, War and Peace, all 1225 pages of it! In Russia's struggle with Napoleon, Tolstoy saw a tragedy that involved all mankind, namely war and peace.
Now with our bibles opened to the Old Testament book of 2 Chronicles, we're going to find, beginning in chapter 14, another account of war and peace, from the life of one of Judah's good kings: King Asa.
What the Russian invasion has caused in Ukraine, the independent spirit from God invasion in the life of King Asa caused: War! War in his life and war in his land.
We're going to find in chapters 14-15 how King Asa's dependence on God led to peace in his life and in his land. But then in chapter 16, we're going to read how King Asa's independence from God led to war in his life and war in his land. A real war and peace life!
Plain and simple: in Chapters 14-15, a dependance upon God led to peace. In chapter 16, an independence from God led to war. You need to write this down: living the victorious Christian life can be summed up in these three chapters. First, peace is enjoyed when depending upon God and second, war is experienced when depending on man. What we need today is a fresh invasion in our lives of a renewed dependence upon God, until we can say along with Charles Spurgeon, ''The sovereignty of God is the pillow upon which the child of God rests his head at night.''
