Luke 23:33-38
ILLUS. - Words matter. - Some words are spoken and you remember then your whole life. Parents wait and wait to see what a baby’s first words will be. - And sometimes it’s last words that are remembered. - No words matter more than God’s Words ... and no last words are more famous or significant ... than the last words of Christ before He died on the cross.
You can learn a lot from someone’s suffering. -Imagine what can be gained from a study of the words of the most significant person to ever walk this earth ... the Son of God Jesus Christ ... imagine what can be learned from His words as He died the most significant death in history. Jesus’ words reveal thing about His humanity, His deity, His mission, the work of the cross ... what as important to Him .. and these words have meaning for us TODAY. The seven statements recorded in the gospels that we will be looking at ... Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Woman behold your son! ... Behold, your mother! My God, My God why have you forsaken me. I thirst. It is finished. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. Today we begin with that word of FORGIVENESS from Luke 23.
Luke 23:33-38 - 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, ‘‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.’’ And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, ‘‘He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!’’ 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and saying, ‘‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!’’ 38 There was also an inscription over him, ‘‘This is the King of the Jews.’’
