Before us in our text is one of the most solemn and heart-gripping stories in all of the Word of God. It is the story of two ''certain ones'' in Luke that had nothing in common either in this life or the life to come.

It is a story of contrasts and differences. It is a story of a diversity of life. It is the story of two men who lived opposite extremes of the social order. One man owned much and the other owned nothing. One man lost everything and the other gained everything. One was a beggar in this life and the other was a beggar in the life to come.

Let's consider the story of this certain rich man and this certain beggar.

1. THEY HAD NOTHING IN COMMON IN THE LIFE THEY LIVED ON EARTH!

The ''certain beggar'' is identified as Lazarus. The rich man is unnamed, although he has often been called Dives; which is the Latin equivalent of the Greek for a rich man. We will call him by this name in our study.

First we see that DIVES ENJOYED A LIFE OF PLENTY. In verse 19, we read that he enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle. ''There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine line, and fared sumptuously every day.'' He was a man that enjoyed the finest things that life could offer. The two words at the end of the verse, ''every day,'' seems to suggest that his enjoyment of the finer things was a daily affair.

We see his daily dressing habits. He was clothed in purple and fine linen. The purple dye was obtained from the shellfish and was an expensive process. Clothing that was dyed purple was extremely expensive. In most cases, it was the garments of royalty and the extremely wealthy. This man only dressed in the finest available.

We also see his daily dining habits. He fared sumptuously every day. The word used describes gourmet feeding on exotic and costly dishes. He was a steak and lobster man all the way. He ...
