ILLUS. - Sometimes you can say a lot with very little. - ‘‘I love you.’’ ‘‘I’m proud of you.’’ ‘‘I forgive you.’’ ‘‘I apologize.’’ ‘‘I’m Ironman.’’ - these are some of the most powerful phrases in in our language. - You can say a lot with very little. Today, you might say, Jesus says, and indicates a lot with very little, simply by indicating as we will see ... His thirst.

ILLUS. - When I was a kid I wanted to be ‘‘like Mike.’’ - For those of the 80s/90s generation we know what that means. - Because Gatorade made us know what that means. - Gatorade the ‘‘thirst quencher’’ had those great MJ commercials of him playing basketball with kids. - Just drink some Gatorade be like Mike. - Back then Gatorade came in large glass bottles, remember that? - Gatorade was invented by scientists at the U of F college of Medicine. Now it’s a household name. - They created a product that met a universal need. - Thirst. Companies know, advertisers know ... if you have a product that can meet a need you have a product you can sell. The bigger the need ... the more you can sell. Everyone gets thirsty. - Everyone gets hungry. These are simply part of the human experience. - In fact these things are so basic to human need they are at times used to convey deeper spiritual realities in the Bible. For instance... The Psalmist talked about thirsting for God. Jesus talked about hungering and thirsting for righteousness. Jesus talked about offering living water, that if you drink of it you’d never thirst again. Thirst creates a powerful illustration, because it is powerful physical need. Today, we will see Jesus on the cross ... and He will say, two simple words - These simple words ... only revealed in John’s gospel ... reveal some things to us about Jesus ... and point to something specifically because it is John that tells us this in the context of His Gospel.
