When Daddy Got Ahold of God: A Father’s Day Sermon
Mike Stone
Luke 8:40-56
Chapter 8 contains this remarkable trilogy of parables. From these sacred verses, a trio of witness could be called forth to testify that Jesus Christ is indeed the Son of God.
There is the Gadarene demoniac, the woman with the issue of blood, and a precious preteen girl, the daughter of Jairus. Many have noted that these three miracles convey a great deal about the miracle-working ministry of Jesus. All 3 synoptic gospels have this story. Matthew 9, Mark 5, and here in Luke 8. A demonic man, a diseased woman, and a dead girl. A young man, an older woman, a little girl.
These three stories picture that whether you are male or female, young, middle age, or old, Jesus can meet your need. Whether it is spiritual, financial, or physical, Jesus can meet your need. Whether the problem is in your family, your wallet, or your body, Jesus can meet your need.
Now this is the story of a man who had an encounter with Jesus. As a result, his faith was forever deepened, His future was forever changed, and his family was forever touched because one day this daddy went out and got ahold of God. But more importantly, this text isn’t ultimately about father of a little girl. It’s about the only begotten Son of the Father. This is a story about what happens, not when a Daddy gets ahold of God...but when God gets ahold of that Daddy.
1. The priority that was recorded (40-42)
Jairus’ daughter has a problem and he brings it to Jesus! When your child has a problem it’s ‘‘stop the presses!’’ Because when your child has a problem...when your grandchild has a problem... Nobody cares about their 401K Nobody cares about their mortgage. Whatever you argued about at breakfast doesn’t matter.
Guess what? Your child has a problem. And that problem is pictured in the life of this little dead girl.
