In Search of a Godly Man: A Father’s Day Sermon

Proverbs 20:6-7
I heard about a lady who sat down by the bus station looking for a potential husband. She was getting older, her biological clock was ticking, and she was desperate. Finally, a man got off the bus and she asked him where he was from. He explained that he’d just gotten out of prison for murdering his wife. She said, ‘‘Oh, so you’re single?’’
That lady was in search of a man! She’s not the only one! But in a much different way and for a much different reason, Solomon expressed a brief word about the search for a Godly man. Many a man proclaims his own loyalty, but who can find a trustworthy man? A righteous man who walks in his integrity. How blessed are his sons after him!
These two verses ASK and ANSWER the question, ‘‘Who can find a trustworthy man?’’ It is the counterpart to the beautiful question of Proverbs 31, ‘‘Who can find a virtuous woman?’’ But here the question is, ‘‘Who can find a trustworthy man?’’ After asking that question, Solomon answers it. Our primary focus is on the answer to the question. Here it is. A righteous man who walks in his integrity. How blessed are his sons after him!
1. His description
Typically, when a crime is committed, if there are any eyewitnesses, the police will ask for a description. What ethnicity? How tall? How heavy-set? What were they wearing? The police need a description so they can begin their search. If you don’t know what a godly man looks like, you won’t be one. For the description of a Godly man, we don’t look to ESPN, Field and Stream, or Fortune 500 magazine. We look to the Bible.
A. A rare man (who can find...)
