Why Did He Go to Calvary?
Rex Yancey
1 Peter 1:18-20

George Webster wrote these lyrics: “Why did he go to Calvary? Why was his life’s blood shed for me? Why did he suffer as no man has ever done? There is just one reason-I am the one.” The chorus of that song goes on to tell us that he loves us, and that is the reason Jesus suffered what he did on the cross. Romans 5:8 ‘‘But God commandeth his love for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly.’’ Peter gives us other reasons in this text.

John 14:6, Romans 10:9, and Romans 10:13, John 3:16. God never planned for man to try to work his way into heaven. Eph. 2:8-10. God never planned for man to worship idols. Isa. 45:22 ‘‘Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is none else.’’ God did not want man to be trapped in a wasted life followed by an endless eternity in hell. There was one plan, go his way, or don’t go at all.

2. THERE WAS A PAYMENT TO FURNISH. 1. There was a ransom payment. He paid a debt he did not owe for those who owed a debt they could not pay. A ransom had to be paid for man’s sin. Ad ...
