Intro/Attention

This is the final sermon in the sermon series, Heroes of the Faith. We have looked at several men and women in the Old Testament who stood out because of their commitment to the Lord. Today, we come to the prophet Elijah. We find his story at the end of 1 Kings and the beginning of 2 Kings. James says, ‘‘Elijah was a man with a nature like ours...’’ (ON SCREEN) Elijah was a person just like us. Studying his life helps us see us how an ordinary person can make an extraordinary difference. We live in a world similar to that of Elijah; dark days. But God has called us to be a light in the world. READ 1 Kings 17:1-7; 2 Kings 2:9-15

*I heard about a lady that went to see her pastor. She was really struggling. She was trying to live for Christ in a very difficult work environment. She told her pastor, ‘‘You just don’t understand, my workplace is so dark and wicked. There’s no one around me who knows the Lord. They are always going out drinking and partying. They are always lying and cheating. They always slack off and never do what they’re supposed to do.’’ The pastor listened patiently, then softly asked a question, ‘‘Where do you put lights?’’ The lady continued, ‘‘I haven’t been able to build a friendship with anyone. My best efforts to be an example to them have failed because they just don’t care. In fact, they make fun of me for my faith.’’ The pastor listened, and then quietly asked the question, ‘‘Where do you put lights?’’ The lady ignored the pastor and continued, ‘‘I don’t know what I’m going to do, I can’t carry on much longer. Maybe I should just quit and find a new job.’’ One more time, the pastor asked his question, a bit louder than before, ‘‘Where do you put lights?’’ By this time, the lady had worked herself up where she almost yelled at her pastor, ‘‘I don’t know, where do you put lights?’’ The pastor smiled and said, ‘‘You put lights in dark pl ...
