Intro/Attention
We are in a series on Sunday mornings called, Heroes of the Faith. We have looked at the lives of Noah and Abraham. And today, we are looking at the life of Jacob. His story is found in the book of Genesis. You see his birth in Genesis 25 and you see his death all the way in Genesis 49. His story spans a good portion of this book. *When you think about a hero, what comes to mind? I can remember growing up I used to watch the Incredible Hulk. This was before CGI and Lou Ferrigno actually played the big green monster. You believed that due was the hulk! I’m pretty there was a time I watched spiderman cartoons and I’m almost certain I had some pajamas with your friendly, neighborhood spiderman shooting webs. These days you may be into watching the Avengers or Superman. But did you know, there are also characters known as anti-heroes? An example of an anti-hero would be Batman. An anti-hero is one of the main characters of the story who can be heroic but doesn’t typically meet all of our expectations of how a hero would behave. The anti-hero may have some heroic qualities but is missing some important attributes. For example, they may be able to save the day and defeat the villain, but they lack morality or courage. Sometimes their actions deliver the right results but maybe for the wrong reasons. Sometimes they act out of their own self-interest instead of the best interest of the community.* Well, when I think of Jacob, the word ‘‘hero’’ is not the first thing that comes to mind. Jacob might be more of an anti-hero. Sometimes he does the wrong things for the wrong reasons. Other times he does the wrong thing for the right reasons. But you don’t see him do the right thing for the right reasons a lot. I wonder, is Jacob really a hero? We certainly see some low moments. But we also see some moments of faith. *And one of the reasons we named our firstborn son Jacob, was becaus ...
