Do You Believe This?
Rex Yancy
John 11:26
There was a man who walked through the cemetery one night on his way home. He tried for an hour to get out to no avail. He finally sat down in a corner of the grave. A drunk was going through that cemetery and fell into the same grave. He tried desperately to get out. Finally, the other man said, “You can’t get out of here!” But he did!
There were those who didn’t think Jesus could come out of the grave/ But he did! There were those who did not think Lazarus could come out of the grave. But he did!
My job this morning is not to convince you of the resurrection. After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples. They saw him and spoke to him. Thomas was absent at that first meeting and when he was told the Good News, he doubted and demanded proof for his own eyes. If Peter, James, and John and all the other apostles could not convince Thomas, I should be under no illusion that in a few minutes I am going to convince you.
There are many proofs of the resurrection. If I were attempting to convince you of this historical fact, I would suggest you look at several things.
1.Consider the biblical record. The psalmist said, Thou wilt not leave my soul in hades neither wilt thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption.”
Jesus predicted his resurrection. “Destroy this temple and I will raise it up in three days.”
2.Consider the witnesses. We need to weigh their words. He appeared before over 500 at one time. Doubters were convinced. Deserters became bold. Despair was transformed into courage. Unbelievers were saved. Family members like James were convinced.
3.Consideer the existence of the church. “Whom do men say that I the son of man am?” “Upon this rock…”
So, what I can do is to confront each one of you with Easter’s bottom-line question. “Do you believe this?”
The resurrection separates our Lord from a thousand other gurus and prophets who have come down the pike. This bottom-line ...
