When the Enemy Closes In

Psalm 5

The other day I saw where a new Jurassic Park movie is coming out soon, one that brings together the characters from the newer movies and the characters from the original movie that premiered almost 30 years ago. You know the movies? The ones where dinosaurs are brought back to life, get out of containment, and start eating everyone in sight.

Did you there are lizards alive today living on Indonesia's lesser islands that are large enough to kill and eat a grown man? Frightening I know. They are called Komodo dragon. While terrifying, they are amazing creatures closely related to the dinosaurs who roamed the earth.

These overgrown reptiles can grow to about 2 feet in height, 10 feet in length and weigh 200-250 pounds. Not a reptile you want to wrestle with! They have a keen sense of smell that allows them to locate dead and rotting flesh up to 5 miles away, almost as far as I can smell a good burger on the grill, if the wind is blowing right!

Not only do they feast on dead animals, but they also hunt and have been known to bring down dongs, deer, boar, other dragons, sometimes adult water buffalo and the occasional human. They have a voracious appetite. A full-grown male can scarf down a 90-100-pound goat in about 20 minutes. To gain a little perspective, that would be like me putting away 320 quarter-pounders in 20 minutes.

If you have seen a picture of them, they look rather clumsy but are extremely agile and can hit speeds of around 12 miles an hour, something I'm pretty sure I can't do! They can climb trees. They are excellent swimmers. They have the ability to dig and burrow. Their bite is deadly. If they don't bring down their prey in the initial attack the high levels of bacteria and toxin in their saliva will cause their prey to die within a few days and become a 20-minute snack anyway.

Add all that up and what you have is a predator that is extremely deadly and difficult to escape.
