INTRODUCTION: *Let me ask you a question: Who sets the table at your house? At our house, it all depends on who is coming to dinner. If it is just me and Gena, then she lets me ‘attempt’ to set the table. I constantly ask Gena; ‘‘What side of the plate does the napkin go? Does the spoon go on the left side or the right side of the fork? Do we need spoons; knives? Do I need to put the plates on the table...Are we going to serve our self?’’ I am not an expert in hospitality.
Now, when we have special occasions (Thanksgiving; Christmas; Mother’s Day; Father’s Day...) I usually retreat to the basement; hoping and praying that she won’t ask me to do anything.
When she cooks for special occasions, she usually sets the table hours in advance; sometimes she sets the table a day in advance. The reason she does this, she has cooked a special meal for special people. *At Thanksgiving, we will have Turkey; Dressing; green beans; corn; Sweet Potato Casserole; slaw; Devil eggs...She wants the table to look good; she wants everything in place because she has spent a lot to time cooking and preparing a meal.
When we come to [Psalm 23:5] we find a table spread in the most unusual place. This table was not prepared by the Cherubim or Seraphim? Not the Archangel of Heaven...This table is prepared by the Lord Himself.
Since our Shepherd, the Lord Jesus is preparing this table---this means that it must be a feast. Jesus always prepares the best meals. Our Shepherd goes before us to prepare a table with good things to satisfy us and strengthen us.
The strange thing is that this is not a private meal. This is a public meal. He has prepared this meal in the presence of our enemies. This is not a secret ‘‘feast’’. This is a ‘‘feast’’ in the midst of our ‘foes’. [Think about a feast...]
Satan wants us to believe that Christ is a cosmic kill-joy. He wants us to think that the Lord Jesu ...
