VERONICA WALKER - WRIGHTSVILLE, GA.
HERSCHEL WALKER - WRIGHTSVILLE, GA.
Herschel, a Johnson County High senior, won four events to lead the Trojans to the state Class A track title, while his sister Veronica, the first female to get a track scholarship to the University of Georgia, won two events to pace Johnson County to third place in the girls' championships. Herschel won the 100-yard dash (9.8), the 220 (21.8) and the shotput (51'¼''). Veronica won the 100 (11.1) and the 220 (24.01) and was second in the long jump, an event in which she holds the state record.
Herschel Walker and his sister Veronica were just another face in the crowd, as Sports Illustrated spotlighted the siblings in their magazine on September 10th, 1979. What is so humorous is that SI spotlighted Herschel alongside his athletic sister, who was a track athlete. Veronica also went to UGA and was an All American track star, the first female to receive a track scholarship.
Of course her brother went on to become the most recognized football player at Georgia and in the south, winning a Heisman Trophy, before leaving college and playing in the newly formed USFL, for none other than Donald Trump. He was involved in one of the biggest trades ever in the NFL.
The thing that was most fascinating however is what happened before Walker got to Georgia was this; he actually wanted to join the military.
That's right; Georgia's biggest competition wasn't any other ...
