The Holy Spirit gave gifts to the members of the church by which they could build the body of the church. Grace gifts ''Charismata'' by which they could build the body.
God also gave certain sign gifts which were not meant to build the body but were meant to be signs to unbelievers to confirm the preaching of the gospel.
REVIEW
Jesus said, ''Don't believe me for my words alone, but believe me for the works that I do.'' The works that He did corroborated the words that he spoke.
ILL. Nicodemus 3:2, ''Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.''
God did that same thing in the early church to the apostles, prophets that the word they spoke might be confirmed by signs, wonders, mighty deeds.
In our time it is as if a man's works match the word of God. For the Bible is God's final revelation.
2 Cor. 12:12: Read. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, wonders, and mighty deeds.
Signs given to the apostles to confirm the word.
Heb. 2:3 (Read) One of those gifts was the gift of healing to verify that they were divine miracles.
When they preached, often they healed as a verification that this was God's word and God's work. God was speaking so that the message was believable.
Miracle of languages in Acts 2. 3,000 believed. Miracle of lame man. Acts 4:4. 5,000 believing men plus w/c = 15,000. It was the mess ...
