Ruth 1
Introduction
A college man walked into a photography studio with a framed picture of his girlfriend. He wanted the picture duplicated. This involved removing it from the frame. In doing this, the studio owner noticed the inscription on the back of the photograph:
‘‘My dearest Tom, I love you with all my heart. I love you more and more each day. I will love you forever and ever. I am yours for all eternity.’’
It was signed ‘‘Helen,’’ and it contained a P.S.: ‘‘If we ever break up, I want this picture back.’’
Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and you men make sure you get your wife a card, or you will probably end up in the dog house! Just trying to remind you of the big day! Valentine’s Day is based on a story that there was a preacher of the Gospel back on the Roman Empire who was jailed because he was a Christian preaching a Christian message! He befriended the Jailors daughter and sent her the first Valentine’s Day card right before his execution. It happened to Be on February 14, 270 A.D. and thereby the legend goes that it was a tradition even back in the Roman empire among Christians to send each other Valentines cards on February 14 in honor of St. Valentine!
According to legend, St. Valentine signed a letter ‘‘from your Valentine’’ to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness. Another common legend states that he defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war.
This morning I want to start a four week series on one of the greatest love stories in all the Bible. It comes from the Book of Ruth, and we know that there are two books in the Bible named for women, and that is the Book of Ruth, and the Book of Esther! Now with being said, let us jump into this marvelous love story from the Book of Ruth!
