I remember when my nephew, who is now grown and married, was just a little guy, nothing but big blue eyes and ears, got his first pair of cleats. He had desperately wanted a pair. He was so proud of them. He brought them to Nana and Papa’s house to show off his new baseball cleats and would not take them off.
But, when he went outside, he would only walk on the driveway. Understandable, every ballplayer knows that cool clicking and clacking sound cleats make on a hard surface but that’s not why he wore them on the concrete. He refused to wear them in the grass or dirt because he did not want to them to get dirty or messed up. He just wanted to look at them and admire them.
So, my dad, papa, tried to coax him into the yard but he wouldn’t come. Then, Papa told him that walking on the concrete all the time was going to wear the knobs off the bottom of the cleats. With that, he took off inside and would only wear them inside on the carpet.
It was a great idea. The carpeted safety of the house would certainly protect his precious treasure. Only problem, cleats weren’t intended for a cushy and carpeted life. They were not intended to be a display item or accent piece. They were meant for the grass and dirt of the ballfield and backyard.

Peter has spent the opening part of his letter putting the glory and beauty of our salvation in Christ on display, a salvation that finds its beginnings in the heart and mind of God, a salvation secured by the sacrifice of Jesus, a salvation that makes us new and gives us a living hope, a salvation that is imperishable, incorruptible, undefiled, unfading, and reserved in heaven for us. It is a salvation so wonderful that even the angels are intrigued by it.
It is a beautiful and glorious gift that God has given us. Peter holds it up before us like the precious and priceless gift that it is so that we can find comfort and assurance in it. He holds it before us t ...
